TITLE:
Creating a 2D face in PhotoImpactXL
SKILL LEVEL:
Intermediate
TOOLS USED:
Bezier / Polygon Path Tool, Layer Manager
ADDITIONAL FILES FOR THE HAIR:
EyeCandy3
(Click the Downloads link at the top of the screen, then go to Filters/Plugins. This site is in Dutch but the EyeCandy3 download link is quite obvious.)
DESCRIPTION:
Use the Bezier / Polygon Tool to create a pop-art type 2D face from a photo.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE HAIR:
Save often.
1. Select around the hair with the Lasso Tool, Soft Edge set to 5. Selection / Convert to Object. Move the object off the hair to one side. Edit / Fill / Color, right click / Eyedropper and choose a medium colour from the hair. Click OK.
2. Make sure the hair is active (by clicking on it with the Pick Tool). Go to Effect / EyeCandy3 / Fur and use these settings: Wave spacing: 30, Waviness:10, Hair Length: 100, Shininess: 20, Smooth: active, drop-down box to "Last Used".
If using PhotoImpact's built in filter Effect / Artistic / Painting, these are my settings:
The hair of course won't look right at this stage but we will fix that. This is how mine looks. I found that Eye Candy gave a different look each trial run so yours may look different.
3. Drag the hair into your EasyPalette to store it, then drag it into the workplace to create a new document. Find your face that you previously stored in your EP and double-click to bring it into the same document as the hair.
4. Position the hair and the face correctly together so that when you work on the hair you can see it evolve with the face. Click on the hair to select, right click Arrange / Bring to front.Work with the main photo visible so you can see the shaded and highlighted areas that need to be worked on and "copy" it over.
5. Use the Warp Retouch tool up the top of the hair to make a part, pushing the hair to the left on the left and to the right on the right with a brush size of 5. With the paintbrush set to Size 5 use both single colour and multiple colour on the Color tab in the Brush Panel to achieve both darks and highlights. Slide the slider up and down in the Color Picker dialogue box to achieve darks and lights of one colour. This will create uniformity.
6. Here is my completed hair. The darks and highlights make it more realistic but not too realistic in keeping with the 2D look. For this reason I haven't painted in individual strands around the bottom and have kept it more as one single shape.
7. Right click Select All Objects / Merge as Single Object. Go to your Retouch Tool / Smudge and click the Mode icon on the Attribute Bar. Gently smudge the white area of the ears and any other white gaps around the face towards the hair to fill the gaps. If you find yourself smudging the hair too much, use the Bristle Smear along the face edge of the hair to bring back definition. Paint in some soft ear shadows and use the warp tool again to create some form. Click the Mode icon again, go to the Layer Manager, Ctrl click both objects, right click Merge As Single Object.
8. Store your completed head in your EasyPalette. You're done.
